As Safety Officer, I have reviewed all club safety procedures. I have now made recommendations and had these improved and endorsed by the chairman and club committee. I am sure one of the reasons we all cycle is to relax and get away from the stresses, strains and tribulations of everyday life. So I apologise now for giving you yet another list of rules and regulations!! Unfortunately these are a necessary evil and are designed to ensure the safety of every member. They are also needed to protect the overall club and specifically the committee in the event of legal action. I enclose, by attachment, two documents for your attention Document 1 The Club Safety Policy and Management Procedures which outline how we will manage safety and establishes responsibilities. By adopting and implementing it, we will be better protected against potential litigation. Document 2 The Safety and Etiquette Rules which define good cycling practice. I would gratefully request that all members read these carefully no matter how experienced they are. The guidelines should be observed by you and will be used as a reference by the committee when dealing with future complaints or safety issues with a member. Obviously the Safety officer and Committee are responsible for management of overall safety but each individual member has a responsibility for their own conduct and monitoring others. It would be hoped that if any unsafe practices are observed, these will be pointed out at the time by any member in a courteous and diplomatic manner. Any advice should be received in the right spirit as none of us are perfect. However when persistent safety infringements are observed by fellow members, this should be referred to the Safety Officer or a member of Disciplinary Committee. Hopefully a quiet word in the ear should resolve any issues without fuss. If further infringements occur then the matter would be settled by the Disciplinary Committee. Currently this is Steve Heasley, Niall Cochrane, Gerry Morgan and Max Davis. Copies of the Safety and Etiquette rules will be kept behind the counter at Brennans. If you bring a guest (experienced or novice) for the first time, please ensure that either you or myself get them to read the rules before setting out A membership form is to be introduced where members contact details are recorded. This will include acknowledgement of receipt of safety documents and a voluntary section for declaring any medical issues e.g. diabetes, asthma, heart issues which might be useful for other members to be aware of in case of an emergency. Once again, thank you for taking the time to read and consider all the points raised. I really hope they will only increase your enjoyment and safety. Have an enjoyable and safe ride Max Davis
